MERC Gunners are an enemy introduced in MADNESS: Project Nexus and one of the seven MERC units appearing in the game. They are armoured brutes who specialize in automatic firearms, and most notably dual wield high firerate SMGs.

Story Mode[]

MERC Gunners are first introduced in the Industrial Sector stage The Boom Factory, where one of them is seen bossing around laborers before confronting Sanford and Deimos.

One MERC Gunner can be seen at the wheel of a truck being scolded by a foreman during a flashback of Nexus City before it's fall.

More MERC Gunners appear in The Station Fortress stage, with one of them antagonizing Sanford and Deimos as they chase the Sheriff, calling the duo a pair of "Employer goons" before engaging the two alongside other MERC units in an attempt to protect the Sheriff.

Afterwards, MERC Gunners may spawn naturally in the Industrial Sector's hub alongside other MERC units to be fought between stages.

Arena Mode[]

MERC Gunners are featured as Mini-Bosses and later recurring enemies in the later stages of Arena Mode's battle stage The Foundry. The first MERC Gunner to enter as a mini-boss dual-wields nailguns instead of SMGs, with later additions wielding proper firearms in The Foundry's infinite waves.

Appearance[]

MERC Gunners sport the standard MERC Uniform underneath a heavy ballistic vest alongside black boots, a gray and brown ballistic mask fastened by two belts, and an ammunition belt and backpack. They are also slightly bigger than their colleagues, albeit not at G03LM sizes.

Personality[]

Much like their peers, MERC Gunners are loud and angry. They often belittle their colleagues, calling them weak even when they fall dead at the hands of Sanford and Deimos.

Abilities[]

MERC Gunners are notorious for their big size, armour and favouring automatic weaponry and dual-wielding it, thus allowing these armoured mooks to tank damage and quickly take care of enemies with combined fire from their two weapons. Gunners alone don't pose much of a threat if the player has enough mobility or cover, but they can become priorities if their suppressive fire shreds through your TAC-BAR and allows the Gunner's allies to get some shots in, and they never come alone.

MERC Gunners rarely flinch, although they can still be knocked down with a heavy kick and, once their corpus is damaged to a certain point, they'll enter a dizzied state, effectively becoming stunned, leaving themselves vulnerable to an execution/takedown.

You can also throw a Flashbang at a MERC Gunner to instantly stun them, leaving them open for a Takedown.

Trivia[]

  • MERC Gunners were known as "MERC Gunner class 3" in the concept art.
  • In the concept art for the merc gunner it is shown that it has a machine gun while that is not true in the final game. Instead it uses dual SMGs.
